The club has a competition of long time with a London club Arsenal FC because of their geograhic proximity and the series of matches between the two are known like the Derby of the north of London . Historical reference marks

Beginnings of the club (1882 - 1915)

In 1882, the club of Football of Hotspur was consisted young men of a local school and club of Cricket Hotspur. The name “Hotspur” was associated with Mr Henry Percy (Mr Harry Hotspur) who lived locally with the XIVe century. Later, the team becomes Tottenham Hotspur to be distinguished from another team called London Hotspur .

At its beginnings, Tottenham Hotspur played in shirts Navy blue, the colors of the club then evolved/moved with shirts divided into two: blue-clearly and white, then red shirts and with the blue shorts and since the season 1899 - 1900 with the shirts white and the shorts of navy blue to pay homage to a team of north of England Preston North End FC which was then the English team most brilliant at the time.

In 1888, the club decides not to more dispute their meetings of the championship on the river banks Lee and then decides to exploit all their meetings a more suitable site called " Northumberland Park" where the club could start to gain a little money thanks to the first sales revenues of tickets to the supporters which wished to attend the meetings.

Tottenham Hotspur then became a professional football club right before Christmas 1895 then starting from 1896, the club takes share with the " Southern league " (Southern League) and started to attract crowd bordering the 15.000 spectators sometimes.

The president of the club of Tottenham was called at the time Charles Roberts which occupied its functions of leader of Tottenham during close to a half century (of 1898 with 1943). In 1899, the club then carried out its final installation not far from " High Road " and as from this moment there, the ground of Tottenham took the name of the street skirting their ground and thus the stage was called White Hart Lane which one could translate into French by " the Alley of the Blanc" Stag;.

This change of stage proved to be profitable since Tottenham became champion of Southern League in 1900 and this success continued the following year since Tottenham gained then the cut of England (F Cup) at the time of the year 1900 - 01. The club is then promoted in the second division at the time of the season 1908 - 09 and still assembled level to reach the the first division as of the following year. The results of the club between 1910 and the beginning of the First World War were then rather poor. And when that the official competitions were suspended on the end of the season 1914 - 15, Tottenham then occupied the last place of their championship.

Years full with hope (1919 - 1951)

In 1919, the Football took again its rights and the championship began again, at this point in time Arsenal FC which had not finished that in the 5th place at the time of the preceding exercise in the second division then took the place of Spurs in the elite. The removal of the club of Arsenal in the districts habitullement known to be rejoined with the club of Tottenham as well as the accession of Arsenal to the more high level then started the mockeries of the supporters of Tottenham towards those of Arsenal.

At the time of the year 1919 - 20, Tottenham was then champion of the second division and at the time of the following season (1920 - 21), Tottenham then beats finally F Cup, the team of Wolverhampton 1-0 with Stamford Bridge. It is about its second success in this competition after 1901.

After having finished in the second place of the championship behind Liverpool FC in 1922, " Spurs" were victim of a slow decline which ended in the relegation of the club in lower division in 1928.

After the Second world war, Arthur Rowe in 1949 became manager of the club and founded a novel mode of play: the push and run . This method of play implied to quickly pass the balloon to these fellow-members in order to flux the play to the maximum. That proved rather effective since Tottenham gained the championship of second divison at the time of the season 1949 - 50. At the time of the following year, they gained the title of champion of the first division in 1950 - 51 although being promoted. The players of the team of the time (considered then as of the heroes) were called then Sir Alf Ramsey, Ronnie Burgess, Ted Ditchburn, Len Duquemin, Sony Walters and Bill Nicholson.
