Total football

The total football is a concept introduced by Rinus Michels when it involved the Ajax Amsterdam then the national team of the Netherlands during the Années 1970. Its apogee took place during the world cup 1974 that the Netherlands lost finally against the Federal Republic of Germany of Franz Beckenbauer (2-1).

The 4-3-3 required of the players to change position and to make a high steam pressing. All the players of field took part in the attacks. The side backs went up on the sides and even the “flying” guard took part in the play.

To try to seize the spirit of total football one can refer to the remarks of the defender of Ajax, Barry Hulshoff: " We discussed space all the time. Johan Cruyff always spoke about where one was to run and be held, and when to remain immobile." " It was a question of making space, of investing it, and of organizing it like architecture on the ground of football.".
