the Roman tortoise is a defensive military formation of the Roman armed . The soldiers group in square, the shield of the first ranks ahead and the other shields placed at horizontal at the top of the head. The Pilum is placed ahead between the shields, for the first lines. This formation is a good protection against the shootings of arrows.
