Torquay

Torquay is a British Ville , located in edge of the Manche, in the south of the England, in the Comté of Devon.

It is administratively attached, since April 1st 1998, with the unit Autorité of Torbay, of which it is the Chef-lieu, subdivision which also includes/understands, while going down towards the south, the coastal towns of Paignton, with which it forms only one agglomeration, and Brixham, like some small towns of less importance inside the grounds.

Torquay is an important component of what one often calls the “Riviera English”, by its softer climate considered to be and more “healthy” that of the remainder of the England, because heated by the currents of the Atlantic. There subtropical plants could adapt, such Aloès, Camélia S, Figuier S, Fuchsia S, Laurier S, Magnolia S, Myrte S.

History

Torquay finds its origin in the Abbaye of Torre ( Torre Abbey ), founded in 1162 and which remained until in 1539, date on which, as in all the catholic monasteries of England, the monks were dispossessed on the order of the king Henri VIII which had just founded the Anglicanisme. The buildings of the abbey passed between various hands, until their repurchase, in 1662, by Sir George Cary, whose family had already Cockington since the 14th century. They remained property of the Cary family until in 1929, date with alquelle they were repurchased by the Torquay Corporation , ancestor of the Torbay Council and left “municipal council”.

A port developed gradually in seaside, called Torre Quay , origin of the current name and, starting from the end of the 18th century, the current aspect of the city started to take turning. In 1807, answering desires the growing of a “top-of-the-range” vacation resort located in seaside, Sir Laurence Palk traced the broad outlines of what should be the city, being inspired in particular by Italian architectural elements for the villas to make build.

In 1848 was brought into service the first line of Railroad connecting Torquay to the other English rail networks, draining a high number of estivants easy social classes, and for which one arranged beaches separated for the ladies and the Sirs, separation which remained until in 1899. At the time of the time victorienne, the royal families British, Frenchwoman and Russian, remained there.

The city obtained a “municipal” statute in 1892, year as from which its urban development intensified.

  • Paignton, which was used as decoration with telefilms inspired of the novels of Agatha Christie. The steam train towards Kingswear appears in the telefilms of Hercule Poirot.

Anecdotes and celebrities

  • Richard Francis Burton, explorer and linguist, nacquit with Torquay in 1821.

  • Agatha Christie, Agatha Clarissa Miller , celebrates it author of detective novels, in 1890 was born to with it and grows there with his/her two older sisters. It accompanied her father with the Yacht Club, it failed to die drowned with the beach of Beacon Cove, will know its promised in marriage first, major Reggy Lucie and her husband-to-be, lieutenant Archie Christie. Besides she evoked her birthplace and of childhood in two of her novels under the name of “St Loo”.
  • the city is the decoration of the burlesque televised series the Hotel in madness ( Fawlty Towers ) of the ex- Monty Python John Cleese, which conceived of it the idea at the time of a stay in a town hall, directed by a characterial owner.
