The business XYZ is a corruption scandal at the origin of the Quasi war between the France and the the United States of America at the end of the 18th century.

The signature of the treated of London in 1794 involved a crisis situation between France and the United States. After its accession with the presidency of the United States, John Adams was decided cause a drop in the tension with France and sent three emissary, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry with Paris.

After several weeks of waiting they met three agents of Talleyrand, indicated by letters X, Y and Z in the reports/ratios which followed (but known later like Jean Conrad Hottinger, Pierre Bellamy and Lucien Hauteval). Before any opening of the negotiations, those required that Adams make public excuses, that the United States grants a loan of 12 million dollars to France and especially that a bribe of 250  000 dollars is versed in Talleyrand. These conditions were considered to be unacceptable by the American emissary.

The business was made public the April 6th 1798, which ignited the American public opinion and brought the deputies of the federalistic left to require a declaration of war of their country of France. Even if Adams refused this formal declaration, it followed two years of larval conflict, with several naval actions between the two countries.
