Tornos is a factory Suisse of machine tools intended for the industry of the Décolletage.
History
Located at Moutier, in the the Bernese Jura, the company is resulting from the fusion of Tornos, itself founded in 1880, of Petermann (undertaken created in Moutier in 1902 by Joseph Pétermann) in 1968, and of Bechler (undertaken created in Moutier in 1904 by André Bechler) in 1974.The machines developed historically by the three amalgamated companies are turns of undercutting to mobile headstock known as “of Suisse type”.
This group occupied to 3000 collaborators. It is about the most important industrial employer of the area. In 2005, its turnover reached 222,6 million Swiss francs.
In 2006, after one long period of structural convulsions having led to Reorganization S repeated, the manufacturer of automatic turns finds himself with a order book well filled, machines innovating which are exported everywhere and of the ideas which are concretized under the crook of a new energetic and pragmatic direction.
Recent history
- 1982 Closing of the branches of Crémines and Ire.
- 1983 Dismissal of 500 employees and closing of the factory of Fleurier.
- 1988 Taken again of 90% of the capital by the German group Rothenberger and Pittler.
- 1995 Closing of the branches of Courrendlin and Courgenay.
- 1996 Presentation, at the time of SIAMS, of a new product: the DECO 2000, which brings radically new solutions for the industrial production.
- 1998 Sale of the company by the majority shareholder Rothenberger and Pittler with the news Tornos Hoding SA.
- 1999 Taken again group by the British investment company Doughty Hanson & Co.
- 2000 Taken again of part of the activities of Schäublin, with Bévilard, to preserve the know-how held by the employees of this company to launch out in a new market segment.
- 2001 Dismissal of 200 employees over approximately 1300.
- 2002 Suppression of 310 employment. Return of Rothenberger and Pittler among the principal shareholders.
- 2005 Transfer of the participation of the Credit Suisse and Doughty Hanson in institutional investors and a group trained members of the direction and board of directors.
