Toquepala

Toquepala is a locality of the south of the Peru which depends on the District of Ilabaya in the Province Jorge Basadre, Région of Tacna. It is to approximately 150 km as the crow flies of Tacna and to 30 km of Moquegua.

Mine of Toquepala

The exploitation of the mine of Toquepala is ensured by the company Southern Peru Copper Corporation. With the mine of Cuajone and the refinery of Ilo, the mine of Toquepala is one of the three establishments of this company in the south of Peru. The mine produces mainly Cuivre and on less scale of the Molybdène and Zinc. The site is connected to the peaceful coast and the port of Ilo by a railway.

General presentation

The cave of Toquepala had been visited before but the news of its scientific discovery by Emilio Gonzáles García was diffused in 1963. Investigations were carried out between 1963 and 1967 by the National museum of Anthropology and Archeology of Lima, with the support of the mining company. This cave measures ten meters of depth on five meters of width and three meters of hauteur.
Ses walls are covered with cave paintings, sometimes superimposed the ones on the others. Dating with the radiocarbon 14 the fact of going up between 10.000 years and 12.000 years.

Description of parietal paintings

These parietal paintings represents scenes of hunting. The figures represented are small: 5 cm in height for the characters and 10 cm for fauna. The men continuing of the South American camélidés with weapons such as arcs and propulseurs.
Pour to carry out these paintings, the artists of this time used colors red, yellow, green and black.
