In Mechanical, a adjustment is the assembly of an external part containing (Alésage) and of an interior part contained (tree). The parts male (tree) and female (boring) have same nominal dimension but different tolerances offering either a positive play, or a tightening, or a dubious play.
The precision necessary for each type of play depend on nominal dimensions, there exist several systems of tolerance, of which the Système ISO of adjustments which this base on the Système ISO of tolerances. ISO is the name of the International organization of standardization.
