Toowoomba

Toowoomba (: 90199 inhabitants) (" the city with the jardins") is a city (" city") south-east of the Queensland, in Australia. The origin of its name is not known with certainty. It could come from an indigenous name which means " marécage". The city is located at 132 km of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and with 2 hours of car of the beaches of the " Gold Coast" and " Sunshine Coast". Toowoomba is after Canberra, more the noncoastal big city of Australia.

History

The history of Toowoomba begins in 1816 when the English exploring botanist and, Allan Cunningham, arrived to Australia coming from the Brésil where it had gone to seek plants which it could cultivate in Australia.

In June 1827, it was rewarded for its research when it discovered a vast area of 16.000 km ² of cultivable grounds, in the east of the Great Dividing Range to 160 km in the west of the Brisbane future.

A few years later arrive of other colonists, of the tradesmen and business men who found the town of Drayton. At the end of the Years 1840, Drayton had sufficiently developed to have its newspaper, its general store, its post office and its hotel " the Royal Bull' S Head In; built by William Horton and who always exists. Horton is regarded as the founder of Toowoomba, although he was not the first inhabitant. It is by sending its personnel to cut reeds a few kilometres from Drayton that those discovered a zone of marshes easy to emphasize by work of drainage. The first municipal council was elected the January 4th 1861 and William Henry Groom was the first mayor.

In 1892 the city became chief town of canton and in 1904 of area.

Geography

Toowoomba is located at the top of a hill of the Great Dividing Range, to 700 m of altitude. Some streets are located on the slope is but the majority is on the west coast. From its position, the rainwater which falls on the city has a very different fate: while falling on the slope is, they will throw themselves in the ocean with " Moreton Bay" to 170 km from there, while falling on the western slope, they will join the " Condamine River" , river of the " Murray-Darling Basin" and will throw themselves in the ocean after a course of 3.000 km, close to Adelaide, in southernmost Australia

The city shelters the " Cobb & Co Museum" , a museum of old diligences and other horse-drawn carriages of the time.
