Toomas Hendrik Ilves
Toomas Hendrik Ilves (born the December 26th 1953 with Stockholm in Sweden), is a Politician, diplomat and Estonian Journaliste . President of the Estonia since the October 9th 2006.
Biography
Ilves was born the December 26th 1953 with Stockholm in Sweden but passes most of its life to the the United States, where his/her parents fled after the occupation of the Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1940.
It makes its studies with the Université Columbia of 1972 with 1976, then with the Université of Pennsylvania where it obtains its MY in Psychologie in 1978. Of 1974 with 1979, it works as researcher at the department of psychology of the Columbia University. Of 1979 with 1981, he is English professor and assistant editor of the open educational Center of the New Jersey. Of 1981 with 1982, it directs the Center of literature of Vancouver (Canada). In 1983 - 1984, it teaches the Estonian Littérature and linguistics with the Université Simon-Fraser of Vancouver. He works of 1984 with 1993 with Radio Free Europe, initially as political analyst, then as director of the Estonian drafting (1988 - 1993).
In policy
Of 1993 with 1996, he was ambassador of the Estonia to the the United States, the Canada and the Mexico. Foreign Minister of the Estonia of 1996 with 1998 and of 1999 with 2002. European deputy since May 1st 2004, it was throughout his mandate the first vice-president of the commission of the Foreign affairs of the European Parliament. He was member of the party the Moderate ones, become the Parti social democrat Estonian. He resigned in September 2006 of it after being elected with the presidency of the Republic.
The September 23rd 2006, Ilves is the common candidate of four parties (including three of right-hand side) to the presidential election. It obtains only 64 of the 101 votes of the Parliament, the Riigikogu, that is to say less than the two-thirds required by the constitution. It is then with the electoral college composed of members of Parliament and municipal persons in charge to decide. The September 27th, Ilves collects 174 votes out of 345 (that is to say one moreover than the minimum necessary) against 162 for the outgoing president Arnold Rüütel.
He is member of the Board of directors of the Think tank the Friends of Europe since 2005, and was in 2005 and 2006, member of the executive committee of the Trilateral Commission.
Private life
It Marie in first wedding with Merry Bullock of which he has two children Luukas Kristjan in 1987 and Juulia Kristiine in 1992. It remarie in 2004 with Evelin Int-Lambot of which he had a girl, Kadri Keiu in 2003.
