History
origins of Tool bag-the-Large
Latin etymology E of “Tool bag”, “Ferrarias”, to discovered of old beams and rudimentary tools allotted to the Mérovingiens, all contributes to recall how much the exploitation the Iron ore conditioned the appearance of the first human settlements in these places. Without iron, Ferrière would probably never have experienced such a development. It is to profit from the resources of the basement (Fer, Chaux, stone, ground with Poterie S…), of the fast course of the Solre but to as guarantee the provisioning of our frontier strategic place as is established in 1715 a royal Manufacture of Arme S. the machine - it is the name which allot to him rural time - fact the prosperity of the borough. It yields the place, in 1830, with the first blast furnaces of North. The ores are exploited in the extent of the concession made to the owner and to ironmaster, M.Dumont.
the preindustrial period
During the Ancien Mode, Tool bag-the-Large is the chief town of large a Paroisse depending mainly on the Abbaye Bénédictin E of Hautmont. The supposed one of Rémont would have been founded besides with the VIIe century by a colony moniale detached to clear and emphasize the grounds. The Seigneurie is very coveted, so much so that ecclesiastical privileges and jurisdiction échevinale are superimposed with difficulty. Majority of 36 fires which Ferrière account in 1469 are distributed around a central core occupied by the capacity religious and consisted the church, the cure, the hospital and the moustier (small Monastère). 181 years later, only 20 additional houses will have been set up. If weak it is, the Urbanisation however consolidates with the wire of the centuries the nodal point and radiates along the main roads in direction of Hautmont, Maubeuge and Solre-the-Castle, preceding the current urban screen.
an industrial borough
It is the early advent of the industry which involves the socio-economic metamorphosis of Tool bag-the-Large. The development of the borough follows that of the Dumont establishments: 903 inhabitants in 1822, 2568 in 1866 then 4045 in 1906. Whereas later in the Valley of Sambre, the population increase is accompanied by an urban change whose architectural forms reflect the Sociologie time, it is still too early to see appearing in Ferrière the industrial types characteristic of the Hainaut. Of course, the construction of new residences proves essential to accommodate the quotas of workmen, but the availability of materials (wood and stones were distributed on a purely gracious basis) and the state of the art explain the development of a habitat whose aspect remains mainly of rural type hennuyer, with an use of blue stones dominating. Little by little, the industrial fabric of the commune is packed: Rolling mill S Lessafre, Riquaire foundry, factory Delattre, Miroux factory, Auwercx factory, Duplex Co, small workshops of forging mills Chief Brothers " Forging mills and Usinage" Marcel Nicodème and of modellings make thrive the commune. It is in Trieux, new district created with the variation of the village at the time of the arrival of the Railroad, that the industrial style will be expressed best. At the beginning of the XXe century, the railroad takes a considerable importance and serves the major part of the factories of the city. A line of Tramway connects Ferrière to Maubeuge in 1903, contributing to reinforce the links, already close, between the two communes.
the modern time
In 1963, the Coron S of the Spie Batignolles are set up near the establishment. They are undoubtedly the realization most representative of this period productivist in the commune. The proximity of large the road axes (RN2/RN49), the privileged position compared to Maubeuge confers on Tool bag-the-Large a great residential attractivity. One witnesses a suburban extension along the ways towards Cousolre, Louvroil, and especially with the accesses of the street of the fort. Undoubtedly is necessary it to see there the consequence of a certain laxism of the documents of City planning. In the East, achievements concerted in the form of grouped houses or of small collectives appear.
