Tony Judt

Tony Judt (born in 1948 with London) is a British Historien, writer and Professor. He is specialist in the Europe and director of the Erich Maria Remarque Institute New York University. It frequently contributes to the New York Review off Books .

Biography

Born in 1948, Tony Judt is high in the East End of London by a mother whose parents had emigrated of Russia and a Belgian father which went down from a line of Rabbin S Lithuanie NS. Judt follows initially the courses of the Emanuel School, before obtaining a Bachelor off Arts (BA) in 1969 then a PhD of history of the Université of Cambridge in 1972.

As much of Jewish parents of after war living in Europe, his/her mother and her father are not practitioners, but they send it nevertheless to the school Hebrew and bathe it in the culture Yiddish of his/her grandparents. Pushed by his/her parents, Judt is interested in the Israeli policy as of the old one 15 years. It takes part in the promotion of the immigration of the British Jews towards Israel. In 1966, having gained an exposure to the King' S College, it takes one sabbatical year and share to work with the Kibboutz Machanaim . When Nasser expels the troops of the the United Nations the Sinai in 1967 and that Israel mobilizes in preparation of the war, like much of European Jews, it goes voluntary to replace the members of the kibbutz which was mobilized. During and after War the six day old, he works as driver and translator for Tsahal.

But after this war, the conviction Sioniste of Judt blunts. “ I went there with the ideal to found a socialist company and a Community country by work ” will say Judt. The problem, it begins it to believe, is that this vision is “ remarkably unconscious of the people which were driven out country and suffer in refugee camps in order to make possible this ideal. ”

Judt was until end 2003 a regular contributor of The New Republic , a moderate magazine pro-israëlien. However its article of October 23rd in the New York Review off Books in favor of a State Bi-national in Palestine, is worth to him to be driven out columns of The New Republic and condemned by its editor, Leon Wieseltier, and other commentators pro-Israelis.
