Tony Fruscella

Tony Fruscella is a Trompettiste of American Jazz , born the February 4th 1927 with Orangebourg (New Jersey) and deceased the August 14th 1969 with New York.

He was married with the actress and singer Morgana King.

Biography

Born in 1927, Tony Fruscella passes his youth in an orphanage where he learns the trumpet. Is 14 years old, it continues its studies of music near Jerome Cnuddle. At 18 years, He plays a time in a military orchestra.

Released, one briefly finds it in the Big band of Charlie Barnet and like Sideman in the formations Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan (Festival of Newport, 1954), Stan Getz,… In 1955, it records for the label “Atlantic” its single “official” disc (of the recordings made at the time of concerts and meetings new with the saxophonist Chuck Moors will be published a long time after its death). It occurs rather regularly with the saxophonists Brew Moore and Allen Eager or the Cornet tist Don Joseph (one finds a description of one in these concerts in a novel of Jack Kerouac).

From end of the year 50, mined by alcohol, drug, it passes, according to the testimony of Al Levitt, more time in prison or in the hospitals that on the music scene. It spends the last years of its life like “without fixed residence” and dies of the continuations of a Cirrhose in 1969.

Style

Tony Fruscella was a trumpet player with the particularly poignant play. The buckled stamp of its trumpet is easily identifiable. Its style is rather close to that of Chet Baker, but it makes watch, perhaps, of a lyricism even darker. The critic Jean Wagner wrote “ Tony Fruscella is perhaps the saddest trumpet player and more despaired of all the history of the jazz; a sadness without revolt, a despair melancholic person which seems to come from the bottom of the ages ”.
