Tony Estanguet
Tony Estanguet , born the May 6th 1978 with Pau, is a champion French of single-seat Canoë (C1), champion of the Olympic Slalom in 2000 with Sydney and 2004 with Athens.
Biography
He is laid off with C.U. Pau the Pyrenees Waters Running (Yrénées-Atlantiques).Resulting from a family of kayaker, he is the younger brother of Aldric Estanguet and Patrice Estanguet, medal-holder of Bronze in the same discipline with the Jeux of Atlanta in 1996. They practiced the Canoë or the Kayak thanks to their father, Henri Estanguet.
At the time of the year 2000, the two brothers must fight to offer the 2nd ticket available behind Emmanuel Brugvin, qualified as a world champion in title.
It has thus the double pressure to represent its country but also brother who could also legitimately consider the Olympic title. It gains the gold medal with the Olympic Games of summer of 2000 with Sydney.
The following year, the championships of the world of canoe-kayak which were to proceed with the the United States are cancelled after the events of the September 11th, 2001.
In 2002, it finally hopes to gain the only title which it misses at the time of the championships of the world which proceed in France with Borough-Saint-Maurice. But it falls in semi-final, wounded with the wrist by a fall in VTT a few days before; honor of the family however being saved by her Patrice brother who gains the bronze medal.
In 2003, although beaten by the Slovak Michal Martikan at the time of the championships of the world, it gains the world cup. Then in 2004, it must again fight against his/her brother to obtain his selection for the Olympic Games of summer of 2004 with Athens. There it gains of 12 hundredths the gold medal vis-a-vis Michal Martikan, coming to thus confirm its victory at the time of the world cup.
In 2006, it gains for the first time the championship of the world which it missed.
Tony Estanguet is currently the only French Olympic double champion in activity. He aims at a new triplet in all the history of the French sport by ambitionnant the gold medal in the single-seat canoe slalom to the Olympic Games of summer of 2008 with Beijing.
