History
Like the Agen-native, Tonneins belonged to Celtic Gaulle, then with the Duchy of Gascogne. She suffered from the Guerre One hundred Year old between the king of England and the king of France, and from the wars of religion.
Tonneins, like many close cities and villages (Clairac, Lafitte, Monheurt, Casteljaloux, Nérac…) converts massively with the Protestantisme. She was very disputed between the Protestants and the royal army, many times invaded, plundered…
Charles IX passes in the city at the time of royal sound Tour de France (1564 - 1566), accompanied by the Cour and Large by the kingdom: his/her brother the duke of Anjou, Henri de Navarre, cardinal of Bourbon and Lorraine. The Consul S of Tonneins refuse their request to restore the worship Catholique.
The Edict of Nantes (1598) made of Tonneins a " place mariage" then, in 1606, a " place sûreté" Protestants. Tonneins, become a center of French Protestantism, will suffer from the increasingly serious tears to the peace organized by this Edict. In 1622 and 1623, it is, twice of continuation, shaven by the royal army, then rebuilt by tonneinquais.
The revocation of the Edict of Nantes, in 1685, force Protestants to be converted with Catholicism. Those which refuse try, risking the execution or the imprisonment, to exile itself, mainly in Northern Europe. This exile of approximately 10% of the population weakens the local economy
