Tongres
Tongres (in Dutch Tongeren , in German Tongern , in Walloon Tongue ) is a common city and Dutch-speaking of Belgium, located in Flemish Région, chief town of district in province of Limbourg.
January 1st 2004, Tongres counted a total population of 29.531 people (14 470 men and 15.061 women). Its total surface area is of 87,56 square kilometers, for a density of 337,26 inhabitants per km ².
Hasselt is the administrative capital of the province of Limbourg but Tongres is the legal capital. The Court of Assizes has there its seat and the Court of Appeal of Antwerp has a second seat there.

History
Tongres is the oldest town of Belgium (older still than Arlon and Tournai). Named Atuatuca Tungrorum by the Roman , it became the capital of the Civitas Tungrorum under their administration. Before the Roman occupation, the city was occupied by the Gallic tribe of the Éburons, of which most known is Ambiorix.Tongres was also one of the 23 Bonnes Cities of the Principauté of Liege.
