Tondo
The tondo ( tondi in the plural) is a composition of Peinture which is carried out in form of disc, and not in rectangle as it is more current. The term comes from Italian rotondo , " rond".
Tondi are created since Antiquity, but it is during the Rebirth that he knew his apogee, sails about it near the Italian painters which reintroduced it, by redécouvrant in particular the Roman Imago clipeata .
Symbolic system
The circle, the sphere and the disc return to the idea of perfection ( to see Quadrature of the circle).
Employment
Placé au ceiling, the tondo serves often associated with the named allegorical types of painting the Apothéose S, being used for déifier the powerful ones by representing them in the air. They are then decorations of ceiling of the size of the mural frescos, and either of the round tables.
