Tonantzin

In the Aztec Religion, Tonantzin is a lunar Goddess-Mother . Like Tlaltecuhtli, it is often represented in the form of a Crapaud swallowing a sacrificial Couteau stone.

Other titles and attributes seem to be to him dependant: " Goddess of the nourriture" , " Grandmother vénérée" , " Serpent" , as an Aztec goddess of the Ground. It brought also the Maïs (" Mother of the maïs"). It is also called Chicomexochitl or Chalchiuhcihuatl, which wants to say " Seven Fleurs" or " Woman in Pierre précieuse" , and called upon at the time of the festival of Xochilhuitl.

In the modern Mexico, the basilica of Guadalupe is built with the site of the old pyramid of Tonantzin. Anthropologue S think that " Notre-Dame de Guadalupe " is a Christianisation of Tonantzin.

In art and literature, Tonantzin is the tragic heroin of the cartoon Palomar of Gilbert Hernandez, which earns its living by selling slugs roasted (babosas) in its village of Central America. It is explicitly named according to the goddess.
