Tomsk

Tomsk ( Russian Томск in ) is a town of Russia, located in Western Siberia. It is the administrative center of the Oblast de Tomsk. Its population rises with: 512500 inhabitants in 2006.

Geography

The climate is continental. The average temperature is of -1,3°C. The winter is hard and continuous, the minimal temperature was recorded in January 1969 with -55°C. The average temperature of January is between -19°C and -21°C, in July between +17°C and +18°C.

History

With 14th and 15th centuries, Siberia was populated various tribes. On this territory the Selcoups, the Kets, the Tatars lived. These people were often attacked by wandering tribes. In 1603, the prince Toïan was then addressed to the Tsar to request his assistance.

The tsar Boris Godounov ordered construction a fortress to protect the Russian colony against the attacks from the nomads. In 1604, a hill located on Right Bank of the Tom, with the mouth of the Ouchaïka, was selected to establish the fortress. Its construction was completed the September 27th 1604. This date is since then regarded as that of the foundation of the city.

Tomsk was initially populated by the soldiers. Towards the end of the 17th century, Tomsk ceased playing a strategic and military part.

To the 17th century, the main road of Siberia called “the Siberian trakt” connecting the China to Moscow which passed by Tomsk contributed to the commercial development of the city.

Education

Tomsk is the first coed city of Siberia by the proportion of students compared to the population (: 83600 students for: 500000 inhabitants). In 1888 was opened in Tomsk the first Russian university in the east of the Ural. Today the city counts seven universities:

Tomsk is connected to the line of the Transsibérien by a minor road starting from the station of Taiga (79 km of Tomsk).

The FC Tom Tomsk is the best club of Football of the city. He plays in first Russian league.

Health

Several cases of Avian flu to virus highly pathogenic H5N1 in birds were announced there, including two hearths in 2006, of which one at Pigeon S, according to the GOOSE (report/ratio of August 4th, 2006).
