Tompkins Park Public garden
The Tompkins Square Park is a large park of 4 hectares of East Side of Manhattan to New York, located at the east of the East Village in the middle of Alphabet City of which it is the true lung and identity symbol. It is bordered by the Avenue has and the Avenue B between 7th and 10th streets.
History
Drawn about 1850, and become public park about 1870, it owes its name with the former governor of New York, Daniel D. Tompkins, vice-president of the United States under the presidency of James Monroe. It was the famous place of social riots on January 13rd, 1874 because of unemployment and poverty. He is also regarded as the pouponnière of the dispute against the Guerre of Vietnam in the Années 1960, because of the young population and hippie of the East Village. In the Years 1980, Tompkins Square Park became for the New Yorkeans synonym of social misery and insecurity, with an important population of SDF, drug addicts and the existence of traffics in all kinds. In August 1988, following a decision of police force to evacuate the park of its population of without residences, and to found a curfew, new violent riots exploded in the night from August 6th to 7th. They were repressed hard by the police force. With the change of population in the Years 1990, the district as a whole deeply changed. A new young population, artists, or families of the middle-classes settled in the East Village. The park is consequently become again a completely peaceful and entirely sure place at any hour, where mix different social classes and ethnic in any harmony.
