Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland means in English the country of tomorrow . It is the place where the future comes to us. This section is in the beginning that presenting the future. A little changing topic and became for several park a presentation of a vision of the future . It is also the section which underwent in all the parks the most change with the wire of time.

Walt Disney was known for its interest for the future and had presented to the American public first impressions future in its television programs. Tomorrowland is a prolongation in three dimensions of this interest.

Each park has a concept slightly different from the others, therefore each concept will be treated here for each park. This concept was sometimes updated for reasons of obsolescence.

Parks

Disneyland

Tomorrowland de Disneyland was re-examined entirely already on several occasions since the opening. Each version is described hereafter. Current attractions are:

Initial Tomorrowland

The first grinding opened in 1955 with only substitutes of the attractions planned because of cuts in the budget. Because of the very short calendar for the construction of the park (of July 1954 in July 1955) and of the development of attractions this section was the last with being built. Walt did not want to transform this Land into a fair exposure of industrialists but like time and the money came it to miss accepted it the majority of the offers. Thus the companies Monsanto Chemicals, American Motors, Richfield Oil and Dutch Boy Paint had rooms of presentations in the buildings at the entry of the Land.

One of only attractions really Disney was the re-use of the decorations of the film 20.000 miles under the seas as strolls pedestrian presented until in 1966.

During the first four years, Tomorrowland was an open space with a very industrial spirit, much of exposure and some attractions since disappeared the whole in a purified and silver plated white atmosphere. One of the principal elements of the Land was TWA Moonliner , the highest structure of the park in its time and a counterpart of space rocket inspired by the decoration of the section " Man in Space" Disneyland television program diffused in the years 1950.

During the first days of the park, attraction Autopia then gave a vision of the highways in construction through the United States. Since it many times was modified or updated.

An important attraction appeared in 1957, the Maison of the Future of Monsanto made it possible to give more body and a daily realism to the futuristic topic, expensive in Walt.

Tomorrowland after 1959

The year 1959 saw changing Tomorrowland with the opening of three attractions, some envisaged at the origin of the park but having required a long development: Monorail ALWEG, Submarine Travels and Matterhorn (attached later to Fantasyland). This year 1959 is considered a rebirth of Tomorrowland and the event was even retransmis on television.

According to the exposure which was held of 1997 to 2000 within the Disney Gallery, Tomorrowland of 1959 to 1967 is called, with that initial, the Tomorrowland of the atomic era .

This version included/understood a named exposure The Art off Animation but well far from the attraction The Magic off Disney Animation which opened into 1989 within the park Disney-MGM Studios.

New Tomorrowland 1967

With the end of the International exhibition of New York 1964-65, attraction Carousel off Progress was to make its entry in the Land renovated according to the desires of Walt which however had been directed meanwhile towards several projects of which the Project Florida. In spite of its multiple occupations, Walt died in December 1966, in seven months of the opening of new Tomorrowland.

New Tomorrowland of 1967 included/understood the addition of new attractions with buildings nine and of a new decoration. Attractions Carousel off Progress , Flight to the Moon , Adventure Thru Inner Space , Circle-Vision 360° and a common platform for PeopleMover and Rocket Jets gave a direction to the new topic " World one the Move" (a world moving).

A few years later, the Land was supplemented by Space Mountain, Star Turns and the Magic-Eye Theater presenting Captain EO , the two last ones replacing of old attractions.

New Tomorrowland 1998

After the important work undertaken by Imagineers on the concept of Discoveryland to Disneyland Paris, it was decided to re-examine Tomorrowland de Disneyland with a retro-futuristic aspect , the name of this verison is " Imagination and Beyond " (Imagination and beyond).

Because of budgetary problems, the majority of attractions outside remained the same ones with simply a decorative change. One can note the closing of attractions Circle-Vision 360° , Mission to Mars , Captain EO replaced by Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and Carousel off Progress replaced by Innoventions. Attraction PeopleMover was replaced by a faster version but with the not very enviable destiny, Rocket Rods . Rocket Jets was replaced by a mobile named Observatron while a similar horse-gear named Astro Orbitor opened at the entry of the Land. Entirety of the Land, whose imposing Space Mountain, was repaints with colors bronzes, but, ocher brown with greens emeralds on the metal parts.

The restoration was not popular among the fans especially because of the attraction (which should be) headlight Rocket Rods closed as of September 200 for technical reasons and financial. Moreover shops and the restaurants were the only true innovations of the Land; what followed the directives of Paul Pressler and Cynthia Harris. The aspect rusts desired by Imagineers became reality and the engineering problems accumulated in conjunction with the departure of the partners of the exposures of Innoventions.

Tomorrowland 2005, return to the sources

At the end of 2003, Paul Pressler was replaced by Matt Ouimet with the presidency of the Disneyland Resort to put an end to the negative spiral started with New Tomorrowland of 1998 and to prepare the ceremonies of the 50e birthday of Disneyland. All the park was transformed into building site and Tomorrowland even more. Space Mountain was closed during two years to remake to nine the circuit of the Russian mountain. The cinema of Circle-Vision, used as film of waiting for Rocket Rods was converted into Buzz Lightyear' S Astro Blasters.

In February 2005 work arrived at their end and the diagram of color laid down for the 50e birthday was accepted, it includes/understands a mixture of blue, white and money closer to the immaculate white and initial money.

Moreover as over the period 1955-1959 various attractions will be born in the four years after the 50e birthday of which Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in 2007. Projects evoke the thematisation of the film Cars: Four wheels for Autopia, rebirth of PeopleMover or a new monorail.

Magic Kingdom

Second Tomorrowland profited from a higher budget and when it opened in 1971, it was closer to the visions of Walt with attractions more innovating. And with the image of the Californian park it was modified but only twice.

Tomorrowland, of new bases

The topic was that of the world moving but here space was skimped less and less piled up attractions the ones on the others. The major part of futuristic attractions of the Disney parks made their first in Magic Kingdom such as Space Mountain in 1975 born with the project of SpacePort. Traditional attractions of Disneyland mainly disappeared into 1998 remain still open: PeopleMover under the name of Tomorrowland Transit Authority or the Carousel off Progress completely moved of California.

The Land respected the diagram of color adopted by Walt with knowing white and pale blue (instead of the money).

New Tomorrowland 1994

In 1994, after the important work undertaken by Imagineers on the concept of Discoveryland to Disneyland Paris, it was decided to re-examine Tomorrowland de Disneyland with a retro-futuristic aspect (as for Disneyland two years later). The topic was that of the intergalactic space port imagined by the authors of science fiction of the years 1920 of which series of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers.

The colors were much more fluorescent or neons with the blue dark ones, mauves or metal especially for the Avenue of planets, the new name of the alley leading of the central place of the park to Space Mountain.

Tokyo Disneyland

In Tokyo Disneyland, Imagineers tried to create town Tomorrowland nearer to a work place than of a fair of exposure of technologies of the future. Because of a more important budget each attraction has a more technological aspect. However attractions were not redécorées since their opening creating of the disparities of style although the color prévalente is the white of the first versions of Tomorrowland American. A project had been announced at the end them years 1990 to standardize the topic and to make a city in conformity of it with the futuristic visions of the end of the 20th century. With Disneyland Paris it was renamed Discoveryland because the concept had been slightly changed. However since 2005 with the opening of Space Mountain: Mission 2 then that in 2006 of Buzz the Laser Bataille flash this section becomes similar to other Tomorrowland.

HongKong Disneyland

The version of the park of HongKong is inspired by the last versions of the American parks with metal decorations with the colors blue and mauves.

Current attractions are:

Within the new Land were proposed attractions such ace ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter; Copy off the original Magic Kingdom version, The Timekeeper has; the American version from the Magic Kingdom, Plectu' S Fantastic Intergalactic Re-examined; musical year audio-animatronic review, and makeovers for classic attractions. However, due to financial difficulties surrounding the EuroDisney project, the plan was cut drastically and plans were shelved until 1997. -->
