Tomoe

A tomoe (巴) is an antique symbol Héraldique Japan in form of Magatama . A current form is the mitsu tomoe , made of three magatama in Spirale. It makes of them a swirl or vortex with three branches turned towards the right-hand side or the left.

The tomoe is common in the family emblêmes ( kamon , 家紋) and the corporative logos.

  • the traditional symbol of the Prefecture of Okinawa, “Hidari Gomon”, includes a tomoe .

  • the weapons of Hachiman Daimyōjin, the god of the war Shintô and the divine guard of the Japan, are form of a tomoe . Certain clans of samurais used them like their, as the Taira.

Out of Japan

The Basque cross, or Lauburu is similar to the tomoe . It is also the case of the Celtic spiral of the Triskel.
