Tommy Söderström

Tommy Söderström (born the July 17th 1969 with Stockholm in Sweden) is old a professional goalkeeper of Hockey.

Career

Söderström was 21 years old when he saw himself decreeing the title of recruit of the year in the Swedish Elitserien for the season 1990-91 whereas it defended the colors of the Djurgårdens IF of Stockholm. He had declared that he would give up hockey if a station were not released for him within the prestigious club and when its chance passed, he did not miss it. At the end of 17 matches, the director of Djurgårdens IF stated to have found new the Pelle Lindbergh. Söderström had excellent reflexes and always calm and was slackened.

This season, Djurgårdens IF gained the national championship with the young guard between the posts and, for the first time of all the history of the Swedish hockey, the Coupe of Europe of the clubs champions of hockey. The same season, the trainer-chief of the prestigious Tre Kronor, Conny Evensson, invited Söderström to join the national team - Evensson was one of the judges who had before decreed in Söderström the title of Recruit of the year. The other candidates this year were Robert Nordberg Luleå HF, attacking it Håkan Alund Malmö IF and no one other that future the supervedette of the LNH Peter Forsberg, MODO hockey.

In 1991 and 1992, Söderström gains the Or with the Championnats of the world and receives the title of better guard of the tournament in 1992. It gains the money in 1993, following a defeat finally against the Russia. It gained also two championships of Sweden with Djurgården.

With such feats of arms, it is not astonishing only that which its compatriots called “the alive wall” drew the attention of the dépisteurs of the North-American National league of hockey. It had been fished out by the Flyers of Philadelphia in 11th round of the Repêchage of entry in the LNH 1990 (214e on the whole) and in 1992, it made the great jump and crossed the Atlantique to carry the colors of Flyers. From 1992 with 1997, it carries the colors of Flyers, the Islanders of New York of the LNH, the Bears de Hershey of the American Ligue of hockey, of the Americans of Rochester of this same league and of the Grizzlies of Utah of the international Ligue of hockey before turning over in its native Scandinavia for carrying the colors of Djurgården again. It declined the offer of Tre Kronor to carry the yellow and blue uniform to the Olympic Games of Nagano, knowing that the trainers preferred Tommy Salo like holder. Although having played to its best level, it could not bring Djurgården to a new championship.

During the season 2000-01, it had to share work in front of the nets of Djurgården with the young person Mikael Tellqvist. Knowing its orgueuil, a rumor started to be propagated according to which Söderström would leave its club to join AIK, rival histories of Djurgården. The rumor proved to be not-founded; it rather withdrew hockey at the end of the season.
