Tommaso Buscetta

Tommaso Buscetta (known as Gift Masino ) (Palermo, 1928 - New York, 2000) was leading of the Maffia Sicilian. It was also the first large one repented Cosa Nostra.

Tommaso Buscetta was affiliated with the gangster family of Carried Nuova in 1948. It quickly became influential within Cosa Nostra and undertook a career shared between the Sicily, the the United States and South America, which was worth to him its nickname of “Boss of the two worlds”. It was mainly active in the traffic of cigarettes and Drogue, even if it always denied to have taken part in this last activity.

Being in the camp of the “losers” at the time of the war of Maffia which burst in 1981 - 82, he resigned himself to collaborate with justice after his arrest to the Brésil in 1984 (it should be said that 32 members of its family will be assassinated). Its contribution to the work of the pool antimafia of Palermo and in particular of the judge Giovanni Falcone was one of most important in the history of the fight against the Mafia. It was in particular the first to reveal the existence of the “regional Commission”, charged to coordinate the activities of the sicilian gangster families. Its revelations and those of other large repented the time like Antonino Calderone or Salvatore Contorno led to the committal for trial of 475 gangsters at the time of the maximum-lawsuit which proceeded with Palermo in 1986 - 87. He also collaborated with American justice, in particular for the operation pizza pie connection .

After the attack of Capaci against the judge Falcone in 1992, Tommaso Buscetta finally agreed to speak about the bonds between the Mafia and the policy which it had held secret up to that point, showing Giulio Andreotti in particular, one of the politicians most important Italy NS of the post-war period.

Living with the the United States under a new identity and profiting from a program of protection of the collaborators of justice, he died of a cancer in his house of New York in 2000.
