Tomakomai

Tomakomai (苫小牧市; - shi is a port city located under prefecture of Iburi on the island of Hokkaido at the Japan.

Its name comes from a juxtaposition of two words of origin Aïnou (indigenous population), " to" meaning " marais" and " makomai" wanting to say " river which is inserted in the montagne".

In 2005, the city had a population of 173 ' 495 inhabitants, a density of 308,8 hab.km ² and a surface of 561,56 km ².

The village of Tomakomai was founded in 1873, the first mayor is elected in 1889. It is only in 1948 that it reaches the statute of city.

Tomakomai is twinned with the towns of Hachioji and Nikko with the Japan and with the town of Napier in New Zealand.

The tree which symbolizes the city is the Sorbier of the bird-catchers
