Biography

Tom is a young English artist discovered by an independent label, dB Records, this one doing nothing but confirm the perspicacity and the vision of Scott Walker, which had invited it to the Meltdown festival before even as it did not leave only one disc. Resulting from a small village and wire from pastors, Tom from now on is installed in New York, after having lived in London.

The exit of its 1st album in October 2000 gave place to a very particular meeting with the French media and public. After many visits and dates in concert, this artist with the talent rare and singular sold more than 70.000 albums in what will become its country of adoption, there profiting from a quasi unanimous support from the public and media: Inrockuptibles, Télérama (4 keys), Release, Magic! , Bernard Lenoir, Channel +, etc

This first album, loan of an intense melancholy and splendid arrangements of cords also made it possible this young artist to be success near English criticism: he was thus nominated in prestigious Mercury Music Prize like with Q Awards in 2001.

The charisma of Tom, its exacerbated sensitivity and its skinned melodies sharp made it possible to weave very strong bonds with the public during its scenic services: Transmusicales of Rennes, 1st part of Around Lucie in Paris, then a round of 11 dates at the head of poster and festivals of summer. A phenomenon is then being born.

During this 1st round, Tom discovers the French repertory and artists: Serge Gainsbourg, Alain Bashung (with which it will divide the poster on the round of the 2nd album), Christophe Miossec, Keren Ann, Francoise Hardy or Dominique have, evoke as much universe which is close for him.

Just Like Blood, the 2d opus left in 2003 and produced by Ben Hillier (Blur and Elbow), was the subject of no precipitation, because Tom is not impatient kind, without being either made too much wait, dB Records not wishing particularly to make assemble the pressure. Just Like Blood was worth in any case the sorrow to wait. As well on the level music, as of the words or the style, this album crosses a new course, because more daring and even darker as its predecessor already largely greeted.

This new album makes it possible Tom to look further into the exceptional relation which it started with the French public. A once again fantastic reception of the media, a Paris round/Province sold out… Tom McRae becomes the type of artist able to fill of the concert halls without any specific promotion, when the desire takes some. It was the case in the Elysium Montmartre which posted complete on November 18th for a concert given “for the pleasure”.

Having written the majority of the pieces of his the first two albums in London and in Europe, Tom McRae changed framework life today. Located in Sao Paulo then in Los Angeles, it was exposed to other universes and new sources of inspiration. Recorded in Los Angeles in Paramount Estate, a studio-villa haunted of phantoms and stories singular - All Maps Welcome, 3rd album published on May 3rd, 2005, was by-product by Tom and Joe Chiccarelli.

“Organic but fully carried out” are the first words which come to Tom McRae to describe his feeling in connection with the 3rd opus, recorded on a live mode. The result? A dark and atmospheric wonder with the sumptuous melodies. The musicians having taken part in the recording are first of all the two accomplices who accompany Tom on scene since one moment: Oliver Kraus (Violoncello) and Olli Cunningham (piano). The latter were joined by the rhythm section of Beck, Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M., Smashing Pumpkins) with the battery, Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Air, ImaRobot) with low and Lyle Workman (Beck, Sheryl Crow, Jellyfish) with the guitar.

Magnificiently romantic and opus most personal to date, “All Maps Wellcome” is promised right now with the more bright future.
