Tolpis

The botanical kind Tolpis gathers some plants the Mediterranean of the family of the Astéracées (or Made up), whose French vernacular name generally employed is trepans . As for all Composed, the Fleur S (or florets) are grouped in a capitulates surrounded by an involucre of Bractée S. the flowers of trepan all are ligulées. The distinction with other nearby kinds is done on the level of the Fruit S and of bractées: the fruits are of two kinds, those of the edge of the flowerhead different from those of the medium. The latter have a brush of smooth hairs not carried by a nozzle. Bractées are many and narrow.

The most known species and most spectacular is Tolpis barbata , trepans it bearded, with peripheral ligulas pale yellow and central crimsons or brown ligulas, sometimes called eye of Christ .

The scientific name Tolpis could correspond to the Greek tolupê , indicating a wool ball, allusion to long bractées external of Tolpis barbata or to the brushes of the fruits.
