Toilets

Water is a film of Deepa Mehta left the September 8th 2005 and which denounces the living conditions of the widows in India. It is about the third shutter of a trilogy initiated by the film Fire (1996) and continued by Earth (1998).

Synopsis

The film is held in colonial India of 1938, at the moment when Gandhi arrives at the capacity. The history begins the day when Chuyia, 7 years old, loses her husband and is sent in a house where the widows Hindus live in penitence. Old from 18 to 80 years, these women “bet” with the shaven head, beg to eat and spend their time requesting while waiting for death.

The arrival of this curious and innocent child will affect the life of the other residents. And in particular that of Kalyani, a beautiful widow which falls in love with Narayan, a young idealist, disciple of Gandhi.

Little by little, the presence of Chuyia will shake all that they were resigned to accept and to push them to revolt against the tyranny of this exceeded and discussed lifestyle.

Controversies

The preceding films of Deepa Mehta, Fire and Earth , started the hostility of integrist Hindus run up against by the tackled subjects. Several cinemas which projettaient these films were the targets of attacks and degradations.

Deepa Mehta started first once the turning of Water in February 2000. The distibution included/understood Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das and Akshay KUMAR. First the day day before of turning, the authorizations granted previously were called into question. The next day, 2000 demonstrators took by storm the ghats where was to be made film and destroyed major the part of the material. They thus intended to protest in favor of the Hindu traditions criticized by film.

Finally, the film was made in 2003, with the Sri Lanka, with a different distribution and under the title River Moon . It was projected for the first time in September 2005 with the international festival of film of Toronto.

The writer Sunil Gangopadhyay brought a lawsuit with Deepa Mehta because it estimated that the history developed in Water took as a starting point its book Sei Samaya published in 1985.

Price

Seema Biswas gained on March 13rd, 2006 the Prix Genius of the best actress for her role in film.

Anecdotes

  • George Lucas bought a page of the magazine " Variety" to bring its supports with Deepa Mehta when the Indian authorities tried to stop the production of film.
  • Water was turned simultaneously in Hindî and English. Only the version in Hindi was diffused in rooms, but the English version is present on edition double DVD of film.

  • Deepa Mehta auditioned 50 young girls for the role of Chuyia. It retained Sarala, although it spoke neither Hindi, nor English. The young actress learned her dialogs phonetically.
