The Romance church Saint Martin's day and the parish-mother of Tohogne

Tohogne (located at 5 km of Durbuy) is in the center of a fertile solid mass almost completely circumvented by the Ourthe and the Néblon. From where that you came, it is necessary to go up to arrive there at an altitude of 270 Mr.

Is it known that the Saint Martin's day church of the village is the largest Romance church of first half of XIe century of Belgian Luxembourg? Its monumentality reaches the 33 meters and comprises four large pillars twice separating the three naves.

Is it also known that the parish is one of oldest and largest of North-Luxembourg, and this starting from VIIe century?

The church of Tohogne was unquestionably built on a Gallo-Roman and frank site, in squared remarkable, in the center of the agglomeration. At that time, Ocquier, Tohogne and Xhignesse remained, until the end of the old mode, direct tributaries of Stavelot, Tohogne being lost very early by the abbey as for the right of collation. It is that the Durbuy-Tohogne area, formerly “tax” ground of the Carolingians, formed part in IXe century of a “freehold” pertaining to the House of Ardenne-Verdun, from where it passed to the House of Namur.

That did not prevent the radiation of the Gospel.

The most important oldest daughter of Tohogne is certainly Wéris. Separation would go back already to VIIIe century! One can advance that together, Tohogne and Wéris were overcast a whole weather about the space-core of the future county of Durbuy. Wéris generated in its turn of new vaults and parish churches. Heyd, from which the primitive church goes back to before 1497, would have been dismembered by it. From XIIIe century, one essarta much in the area, in the east of Wéris, on the side of Erezée. As for Mormont, it had a vault in 1580 (parish in 1836). The priest Léonard Poncin de Tohogne, senior of the Council of Ouffet, ensures in the parochial registers that Grandmenil concerned formerly the old parish of Tohogne.

More close to Tohogne, the play of filiations is clearer. Borlon, vault in 1497, is still dependence of Tohogne in 1558. Bomal (with Herbet and Boclinville, missing) is parish very early (already in 1184). In 1325, it existed there in Durbuy a Saint Nicolas's Day vault; nevertheless it concerned directly Tohogne until 1611. At this time, Palange and its dîme, dependant on Tohogne, were allotted to Durbuy. Barvaux had a vault a long time. In 1611, it was set up in perpetual vicariate. Verlaine s/O. raised from time immemorial of Tohogne. It is only into 1843 that the church castrale became independent branch. As for Houmart, its first vault goes back to 1850. It was chapellenie of Tohogne in 1856 and then branch in 1872. As for the church of Warre, it was built by the piles and mystical Michel Cosme in 1888.

As it is seen, the maternity of Tohogne is fertile and immense. The nearest which had similar parochial surface is Xhignesse.

But let us return to the remarkable monument which is the Saint Martin's day church. It is directed towards the east and has all the characteristics of the primitive novel-mosan of first half of XIe century. Severe play of the lines and volumes according to the Carolingian traditions, not of transept, three naves, moellonnage coarse, “opus incertum” says Courtens (“Belgium Romance”) with very varied mortar, sometimes pink crushed brick and lasts, traces of old rough coats and of joints in pre-novel, some affirm (?).

The roofs are not primitive. The high roof was originally flat. The ends of large beams appear which supported the ceiling of oak. The gouttereaux walls were heightened from 60 to 70 cm.

The high windows still have their rudimentary clotheshanger without truth Claveau.

On the lower floor, the obviously convex walls, supported on a chaining not very rectilinear, are of a coarse apparatus without horizontal. The current windows are XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries except that on the northern side, a large window blazing (XVe century) close to the old Saint-Pierre vault. One can see some traces of the old openings, rather high and small, which were not in the axis of the interior spans. One can also discover, at the southern part, the Remplage of the old door called “in paradisum”; even northern thing side more close to the tower. They are undoubtedly the primitive doors.

The turn-keep did not have a door giving towards outside. The current gate probably comes from the small being next to pinion. It carries a beautiful pattée cross, emblem of Templiers. Old tower, it remains the core; interior, one still sees the clotheshanger of the first room giving in the large vessel at the level of old the Jubé (dating from the XIXe century and removed in 1975). The tower was rebuilt fine of the XVIIe century.

The chorus was remade with new, in 1682, in a different style.

Inside: five spans on large square, massive pillars and without base. Two were replaced in underpinning, at the XVIIe century, by round columns, to undoubtedly facilitate the sight of the chorus.

The absidioles of the two small naves semicircular are pasted and covered with a vault in Cul-de-four. At the entry of the chorus, one cut in the bottom of the amounts (old bases of the triumphal arch), to ensure more visibility towards the furnace bridge; one placed there two posts (of re-employment) of which one is cubic Rhenish novel. That of left, simple die (doric?). There is a clear cut between the naves where reign semicircular arch and the chorus which appears in its style of the XVIIe century with its two large rectangular windows and its monumental Retable Baroque.

Many remarkable parts of furniture have established among in the church. Few rural churches have, indeed, such a diversity of works of Article Citons some: the martyrdom (XIVe S.), the baptismal font (13-14th S.), the pulpit of truth (XVIIIe S.); a remarkable sculptor including three moyenâgeuses statues: the Charity of saint Martin (1520-1540), holy Anne trinitaire and holy Nicolas de Myre (these two last works having been catch in 1994).

A very important restoration took place in 1975. During this work, a small arched sucker was discovered in the central Nef and one realized that vast murals dating from XVIe and XVIIe centuries were preserved in the central vessel under many layers of paint. They were released in 1981 per Mr. Jacques Folville.

Genuine ECRIN of religious history, the church Saint Martin's day de Tohogne does not leave be more remarkable of our Ground of Luxembourg! Primary sources: German NINANE (abbot), editorial articles published in “the Future of Luxembourg” in May 1970.
