Tobolsk

Tobolsk ( Russian Тобо́льск in , Tubıl in Tatar) is a city of the Oblast de Tioumen, in Russia, and the historical capital of the Siberia. It is with the junction of the rivers Tobol and Irtych. Its population is of: 101100 inhabitants in 2005.

History

Tobolsk was rested by the Cossacks of Yermak in 1585 - 1586 during first advanced Russian in Siberia. The city became the seat of the viceroy of Siberia and thrived thanks to the trade with the China and Bukhara. The first school, the first theater and the first newspaper of Siberia were drawn up there.

In 1761, the French astronomer Jean Chappe of Auteroche came in Tobolsk to observe the passage of Venus under the disc of the Sun. It successfully carried out this observation the June 6th 1761, but the account of its voyage, very critical with regard to Russia, caused an answer of Catherine II in person.

Tobolsk was the seat of the governor-general of Western Siberia until his transfer to Omsk, towards 1830. From the end of the 19th century, the city knows a certain decline, because it is penalized by the construction of the railroad Transsibérien, which passes to a hundred kilometers of the city.

After the Revolution of February 1917, the tsar Nicolas II and his family were led to Tololsk, where they lived in the relative luxury of the old house of the governor-general. In April 1918, whereas the noise ran that the white army approached the city, the imperial family was transferred to Iekaterinbourg.

The saving in Tobolsk rests today on the refining of oil and petrochemistry. The principal company is Tobolsk-Neftekhim group SIBUR.

Monument

Tobolsk is the only town of Siberia and one of the rare towns of Russia to have a the Kremlin hones some, builds towards 1800. Its white turns and its walls, its churches and its palates constitute an exceptional architectural unit.
