Tobias George Smolett (March 16th 1721 with Renton - September 17th 1771) is a Scottish novelist , known especially for its novels picaresques.

Biography

Initially doctor, his career in medicine was difficult and not very brilliant. He turned to the literature which was hardly more lucrative at its beginnings. However, towards 1748, two of its novels enable him to improve the ordinary one. He knows French well and goes on a first journey to Paris in 1750.

In 1763, it accomplishes a great voyage in family of France in Italy. Prematurely out-of-date (it is 42 years old) by work, disappointments and the loss of a girl, it seeks a moral and physical diversion. It leaves the British fogs for a one year stay and half on the Mediterranean shores. Health reasons - a chest complaint - push towards sunnier regions. Boulogne, Paris, the valley of the Rhone and we find Smollett in Montpellier. It takes many notes on the visited countries, and sends some in its many letters intended for his/her friends of England.

At the village of Saint-Laurent-of-VAr, there is a team of frontier runners always ready to guide the travellers in the passage of the river. “Six of these men, the pants rolled up to the belt, with long poles in hand, took care of our car and, by thousand turnings, led us healthy and safe to the other edge. ”

It arrives finally at Nice at the end of 1763. It remains in Nice until spring 1765, a stay intersected with a voyage in Italy. But it recovers health under the winter sun.

On its return, it publishes a work in two volumes entitled Travels through France and Italy with the grumpy and often critical tone. Its glance is sour but seems right. It describes the Roman ruins of Cemenelum and depicts the popular life. Extracted from one of its accounts concerning the “feasts” niçois which are placed between spring and the summer: “and women meet in the most beautiful clothes and dance with the sound of the fifre and the drum. Displays travelling offer shoddy goods, curios to be offered, cakes, bread, liquors, wine. All the company of Nice goes there. I saw a whole nobility with the one of these feasts, which was held on the main road in summer, fray with an huge crowd of peasants, mules and asses. She was covered with dust and perspired of all her pores in the excessive heat of the summer. I will be extremely annoyed of knowing from where can be born their pleasure in these occasions or to explain why they all go to these go, unless that is not prescribed to them like a penitence or like before taste of the purgatory. The pinks and the eyelets are sent to Turin, Paris and even London. One packs them in one limps of wood, in a hurry the ones against the others, without no preparation. Who receives them cut the end of the stems and plunges them during two hours in vinaigrée water, giving again their freshness and their beauty. ” (Nice 1764)

Its account of voyage is an important success. It then attracts the very first fortunate English families and the artists in evil of inspiration. In spite of its bad mood and its difficult nature, it proves one to defer curious, advised, original of spirit and equipped with a glance sharpened on the things. It describes the shades and the lights of this region, the nuisances of the climate and the beauty of the flowers and its winter softness. The niçoise influence will mark its later literary inspiration.

Smollett died in Leghorn in Italy where it rests.
