To reinvent the square wheel

Réinventer the square wheel is a bad practice of rather current Ingénierie, which consists in reinventing a bad solution whereas there is good. Although the expression is usually used within the framework of the Antipattern S in software Génie, the idea is applicable to any type of engineering. The universal character of the problem and its solution, like the Wheel for example, makes even more characteristic this bad practice.

Square wheel or dented wheel?

One can clearly identify two types of “bad wheel”, conceived to solve a recurring problem, with each one his characteristics:

; the square wheel: it is about a solution which does not exist for the problem concerned, because this solution is obviously a bad concept, so much so that anybody did not want to implement it or publish it. To invent this square wheel is thus probably a bad idea, because it of it is the need even which is called in question.

; the dented wheel: it is about a solution which exists but which was badly reinvented, so much so that it is definitely lower than the traditional solutions existing and available. To use this wheel is not in oneself a bad idea, but to have reinvented it is clearly.

Practical of the square wheel

To reinvent the wheel square is a rather current practice in the inexperienced engineers, having either a bad knowledge of the problem (square wheel), or a bad knowledge of the current solutions (dented wheel). It is a Antipattern whose result is a poor version of an artefact running, whereas to use a standard version would have been much faster, easy, and would have given much better results.
