The month of Tishri or Tishrei (héb. תשרי) is the first month of the ecclesiastical year, and the seventh of the calendar year of the Hebrew Calendrier. It is one 30 days month autumnal.
The name of Tishri, origin Akkadien tašrītu " Commencement" , of šurrû " commencer"), was largely used since the Captivité in Babylon, appearing in the Talmud and the Targoum d' Onkelos.
First or seventh month?
In the
Bible, Tishri is known under the name of "
Ethanim ", the seventh month, and it is besides as it is called still nowadays by the Karaïtes. Those do not recognize at the first day of this month the statute of
Rosh Hashana (litt. " head of the année"), as it is of use in the rabbinical Judaïsme.
Il would seem indeed that the fact of beginning the year in this month is a Babylonian use, compared to the crop year, whereas the first month in the Bible is explicitly
Nissan, month of the Exit of Egypt.
The Wise ones of Talmud reconcile this agricultural beginning of the year with the theological plan in the following way:
the world is judged four times in the year: at Passover, a decree is resulting on what the ground will produce; at Pentecost, on the fruits of the trees; to the day of the New year, all the men pass in front of " Lui" (God); And with the festival of the Huts, a decree is pronounced on annual precipitations -- Mishna, treated Rosh Hashana.
