Relations between the China, civilization plurimillénaire having influenced all the the Far East, and the archipelago of the Japan, which received with the first chief this cultural influence, have a history marked by exchanges and ceaseless competitions. In the recent History, two wars took place between these two countries, whose first is the Sino-Japanese war of 1894-1895 .
War of 1894-1895
Initiated by a controversy about the Korea, kingdom which is geographically between the two countries, the first Sino-Japanese war began in August 1894. Whereas Japan had entered the industrial era and had obtained a powerful army, China had then accumulated an important delay in its economic development. After March 1895 and many military defeats, imperial China of the Dynastie Qing must sign the treaty of Shimonoseki.Great stages of the conflict:
- the Bataille of Bingyang is gained by the Japanese (Aritomo Yamagata)
- the Bataille of Port-Arthur gained by the Japanese (Iwao Ōyama and Maresuke Nogi)
- the Bataille of Moukden gained by the Japanese (Yasukata Oku and Maresuke Nogi)
Treaty of Shimonoseki (April 17th, 1895)
By this treated of Shimonoseki, also called treated of Maguan (馬關/马关), the China, overcome, is committed yielding to the Japan Taiwan, the archipelago of the Pescadores and the peninsula of the Liaodong (with Port-Arthur in Mandchourie). China also gives up its suzerainty on the Korea, which becomes a Japanese colony in 1910. The whole of these territories remain Japanese colonies and under the modernisatrice influence of the era Meiji until the Japanese defeat of 1945.
