Tirano

Innocent Gentillet , born in 1535 and dead the June 23rd 1588, is a French lawyer and theologist.

Huguenot moderated, Parliamentary lawyer then , it is exiled with Geneva after the Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, then returns to France after the edict of Beaulieu of 1576. Its Protestant opinions again make it exile in Geneva in 1585.

He writes in 1571 Discours on the means of controlling well (Anti-Machiavel), in which he condemns the ideas of Nicolas Machiavel, suspected of wanting to introduce impiété and immorality into the government. It shows the Italian there entourage of Catherine de Médicis to be made the propagators of them. The work, which appears initially in Latin, then in French and English, knows a considerable diffusion through all Europe until the middle of the 17th century. Gentillet affirms that the source of the richness of a State comes from its strong population. It estimates that the internal conflicts and the bad laws are contrary with the development of the population and condemns the luxury like vermin to the public welfare.

The Anti-Machiavel contributed to establish the durable misunderstandings on the work of Machiavel, of which it constitutes the first refutation. He announces also the Political science such as Jean Bodin defines it.
