Tinning

Tinning is an operation of Traitement of surface which consists in applying a layer of tin to a metal part.
Methods of deposition
The coating of tin can be deposited according to various techniques:- by electrolysis
- by a chemical plating
- by immersion of the part in a tin bath in fusion followed by a centrifugation, a wiping or a draining
- by superfusion (deposit by electrolysis followed by an immersion in an oil at very high temperature)
The thickness of the coating deposited depends on the technique used: up to 2 µm for the chemical plating, up to 20-30 µm for the electrolyzes and approximately 50 µm for the immersion.
Scopes of application
In industry, tinning is used mainly in the electric field and electronics because it makes it possible to ensure a protection against the corrosion of the part (in particular out of copper), to offer a good electric conductibility and to improve the weldability of the part.In the food field, various ustensils, like the pans in Copper, are galvanized in order to prevent that the Cuivre does not mix with cooked food. As the tin deposit ends up wearing with time, one can then entrust them to a tinner in order to give a new deposit.
The Tinplate
The tinplate, material consisted a thin sheet steel having undergoes a tinning, is used for the light manufacture of many Emballage S such limp them of Conserve, of the quills of drink, the cases Aérosol S, of limp of painting, of limp decorative, of the stoppers crowns and capsules, etc… The worldwide production of tinplate reaches 16,5 million tons in 2004.
Various types of coating
There exist alternatives with the deposit of pure tin, in particular of alloys of tin/Plomb. The latter have the characteristic to have a and melting point which is lower than that of the pure tin pure Plomb (respectively 505 K and 601 K). The point Eutectique is obtained for an alloy made up of 63% from tin and lead 37%. The melting point of this alloy goes down then to 456 K, thus facilitating the coating dip or weldability.
