Tinian , one of the three principal islands of the the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the archipelago of the Mariannes, is an island of a hundred square kilometers located at approximately eight kilometers in the south-west of its island sister (Saipan) and at a hundred and thirty kilometers in the north of Guam.

Tinian is especially known to be conquered by the American forces in July 1944 - after the Bataille of Tinian - and to be used then as bases for the bombardments of Japan, in particular for the nuclear bombardments of the towns of Hiroshima (by Enola Gay with the bomb with the Uranium Little Boy on August 6th, 1945) and of Nagasaki (by Bock' S Because with the bomb with the Plutonium Fat Man on August 9th, 1945).

Air base during the Second world war

After the conquest of the the Northern Marianna Islands and in particular of Tinian by the the United States within the framework of the War of the Pacific during the Second world war, Tinian became an important base for the remainder of the Countryside of the Pacific. Tinian sheltered, at the time of its conquest, three airports and a fourth in construction.

Tinian became the greatest air base of the world. It was able to shelter fifty thousand men and a thousand of B-29.

July 26th, 1945, the Indianapolis cruiser delivered to Tinian the elements of the two atomic bombs which were released on Hiroshima and Nagasaki August 6th and 9th 1945.

Tinian today

The aerodromes of Tinian are unused today though the marine of the United States maintains an activity there.

Tinian is it today second the most populated island of the Northern Mariana Islands.
