Timočka Krajina

The Timočka Krajina , in Serb Cyrillic Sr ТимочкаКрајина, in Bulgarian bg Тимошко (Timochko), in Wallachian and Rumanian ro Valea Timocului, is a geographical area located at the east of the Serbia. According to the census of 2002, Timočka Krajina counted: 284112 inhabitants.

The name of Timočka Krajina means the “border of Timok”. The area was thus named because of its localization along the Timok and close to the " frontière" (Krajina) between the Serbia and the Bulgaria.

History

Between 1918 and 1922, two districts of the Kingdom of Serb, Croats and Sloveniens existed in this area: the district of Krajina , with like chief town Negotin, and the district of Timok , with like chief town Zaječar. In 1922, these two districts were joined together in the oblast of Timok, with like Zaječar capital; this district existed until 1929, date on which it was integrated in the lately formed Morava Banovina, with like capital the town of Niš. Today, the area is again shared between two districts: the district of Bor, with like administrative center the town of Bor, and the district of Zaječar, with like administrative center the town of Zaječar.

  • Serb = 243.148 (85,58%)
  • Wallachian = 23.604 (8,31%)
  • Roms = 2.723 (0,96%).

Languages

Traditionally, the inhabitants of Krajina speak a dialect torlakien (torlački), however all use the Serbe chtokavien (Serb standard) in the formal conversation. The Wallachians speak the Valaque, which approaches the Rumanian .

Religion

The almost exclusive religion of the area is the orthodoxe Christianity, but the Roman Catholicism is also present there.

Economy

The area is rich in Cuivre and Or, especially around Bor and of Majdanpek.
