See also: Time Spindle,

Un' spindle horaire' is a zone of the surface Ground stre where the adopted hour is identical in any point. Generally, a time zone follows the average hour more or less of the central Méridien.

This system was proposed by the engineer and geographer Montréalais Sir Sandford Fleming in 1876, with the meridian line of Greenwich like origin of times, the Date-line to the meridian line 180° (is and western), and by dividing the sphere of 24 of the same time zones cuts.

The legal schedules are based on the universal Time coordinated (UTC), to which is added or withdrawn a certain number of hours. They do not correspond today however inevitably to the original time zones, because of a certain number of adaptations :

  • a country generally has only one Standard time even if it is with horse on several spindles (it is the case of the China and the India)   ;
  • Certains large countries (the United States, Russia, Canada, Australia, Brazil, RD Congo, Indonesia etc) are arbitrarily divided into several zones in order to avoid a too great difference between the standard time and the solar hour. It is also the case of certain distant dependences (such as for example DOM-TOM French, the the Portuguese Azores, etc)   ;
  • a country can adopt one hour other than that which to him would be intended a priori . In fact the case of the continental Spain (except in the Canaries which is located a time zone earlier) or French Métropole is per hour of the Central Europe (hour of Berlin since 1940)   ;
  • certain countries chose one hour not corresponding to an original spindle (Afghanistan with UTC+4: 30 or Iran with UTC+3: 30)   ;
  • a part of the world knows a Summer-time and a Heure of winter , created to carry out energy saving (and sometimes criticized).

Consequently, the worldwide of the sphere at present uses 41 time zones (by counting UTC+8: 45 which is not an official spindle), including 36 all the year (but not inevitably by the same countries), two only at the boreal hour of winter (UTC-3: 30 and UTC+3: 30), only at the southern hour of winter (UTC+12: 45), exclusively at the boreal summer-time (UTC-2: 30), the last only at the southern summer-time (UTC+13: 45).

Usual time zones

The following paragraphs detail the countries and territories using each time zone.

The marked areas of an asterisk (* in the northern hemisphere, ** in the southern hemisphere) are those which observe the Summer-time: +1h00 in be. In this case, the time zone indicated is that in which the area is when it does not apply the summer-time. In Europe, the passage to the summer-time is made with the morning the last Sunday of the Mois of March and the passage to the Heure of winter, in the morning of last Sunday of October), in both cases with 1:00 UTC. In North America, the passage to the summer-time is made Sunday of the second week of the month of March, at 2 hours of the morning, and the passage per hour of winter Sunday of the first week of November.

The expressions used to define certain time zones (“Central Europe Time”, for example) do not have anything official and are generally transfers of English traditional expressions.
