Time when we sang
the time when we sang is a novel of the American writer Richard Powers, published with the the United States in 2003, translated into French and published in France into 2006 with the editions Cherche Midi.
This novel, writing with the first nobody, is the history of the three children of David Strom, physicist Jewish German emigrant in New York in the years 1930, and of Untied Daley, young woman black American coed in classical music of Philadelphia. Untied David wife in spite of the reserve of her family, and together try to raise their children beyond the races and of time, in the love of the music. Joseph, the narrator, is the junior by the family. He becomes the pianist guide of his Jonah older brother, tenor with the extraordinary voice and dominant figure. Both will cross together 50 years of the American history, will face racial discrimination made with the blacks, and will devote their life to the music. Ruth, the benjamine, marked by the social injustice of the company becomes militant active at the time of the period of the Civil laws in the years 1960, rejecting the culture white of his/her father and represented by the music of his/her brothers. Joseph tries to maintain the bond in this torn family, and to find his own way towards happiness.
