Timarcha tenebricosa

The spit-blood (timarcha tenebricosa) is a Insecte of the family of the Chrysomelidae which one can meet everywhere in Europe.

This large chrysomélidé is strongly an animal with the body curvature. It is apterous and its élytres is welded. it moves slowly and presents the characteristic, in the event of disturbance, to make it dead then emit by the mouth but also by the articulations, a red liquid which has very bad taste for the predatory ones. This liquid is Hémolymphe. This phenomenon of bleeding reflex exists in other apterous insects.

It is monophage: it nourishes Gaillet exclusively in particular the species with tender sheets like Galium verum or Galium mollugo.

Early, one can observe it in the grassy places, the slopes, the edges of ways as of March.

Starting from eggs laid in spring, large larvae (20 mm) develop with the rigid teguments which live on the seedlings of gaillet and which after Nymphose with the autumn and diapause winter will give adults to next spring.
