Tilman Riemenschneider

Tilman Riemenschneider (born with Heiligenstadt in the district of Eichsfeld towards 1460, died with Würzburg the July 7th 1531) was a German Sculpteur which worked mainly with Würzburg as of 1483. It was one of most prolific among the sculptors of the Moyen-âge, a Master of the sculpture on stone and wood.

Biography

Tilman Riemenschneider was born between 1459 and 1462 with Heiligenstadt in Thuringe where it spent the first five years of its life. The family then settled with Osterode in Lower Saxony.

Towards 1473, he became apprentice sculptor with Ulm and Strasbourg. He learned the bases from his art near Martin Schongauer, but today no work of this period is had.

In Würzburg, it was accommodated on December 7th 1483 like companion in the corporation Luc saint of the painters, the sculptors and the glaziers. February 28th 1485, it married the widow of a Master goldsmith, Anna Schmidt. It obtained the title of " then; maître". Its marriage brought honor and fortune to him. Anna Schmidt died at the end of ten years, leaving him a girl. It remaria in 1497 with Anna Rappolt with which he had another girl and three wire. She also died after ten years of common life. Tilman Riemenschneider contracted a third marriage in 1507, with Margarete Wurzbach and finally, after the death of this one a fourth in 1520 (one knows only the first name of the last wife, Margarete who will survive to him).

While its successive wives held the household perfectly, Tilman could devote entirely to its Article Around 1500, he is a recognized artist and a rich citizen. He had several houses, land and buildings with vineyards and a flourishing workshop with Würzburg where worked of many collaborators.

In 1504, it entered to the town council of Würzburg where it sat during more than 20 years. It accepted also the load of burgomaster (1520-1521), but it was excluded from the Council, was imprisoned and tortured in the fortress of Marienberg, after having supported the insurrectionists against the princes at the time of the Révolte of the bumpkins which made in Würzburg more than 8000 victims.

Until its death in 1531, it led a life withdrawn with his fourth wife to Würzburg. It is only at the 19th century that one has redécouvert Tilman Riemenschneider like a major artist of the Renaissance. One discovered his tomb only in 1822.

Its art

The wood and stone sculptures created by Tilman Riemenschneider are often characterized by expressive faces (with a " sight turned towards the intérieur") and by draped detailed and perfectly returned. Some of its work were only outlined. He is the first important sculptor in whom that is the case.

Its successors and/or pupils were Peter Breuer, Philipp Koch, but also much of others now forgotten.
