Tile
FOOT-NOTE : Tiles of the American Space shuttle: to see the article Heatshield
The tile is a structural component used in the building like part of cover for the Toiture.
Most of the time, the tiles are manufactured in Terra cotta, or concrete. There exist various types of tiles, described hereafter. It is very employed in the areas where the Argile is abundant, generally in the plains, in lower part of 500 meters altitude.
Various types of tiles
Tile channel
The tile channel, or traditional tile, very much used in the south of France, takes as a starting point the forms and especially of the aspect, once posed, of the Roman tiles such as one can still see some on the roofs of the old workings of the Italian cities. These tiles were of different form according to whether it were about the tile of the lower part, punt with two side edges statements, or of that of top, semicircular section ( imbrex and tegula ).The tiles channel, such as it are nowadays manufactured, are identical by their form, that it is about the tile of the top (tile “of hat” or “cover”) as well as of the tile of the lower part (tile “of current”). They are of truncated section: the basic diameter is smaller at an end than with the other (the diameter basic external the top of the tile is the same one as that of the interior of the bottom of the tile, which makes it possible to encase them).
The legend wants that formerly, to give him this form, clay with the state of paste was moulded on the thigh, by specifying " sometimes; on the thigh of women… " , which could have a relationship with the qualifier, still attached to the tiles large-sized channel, of: " stem of botte". In fact, one made use of gauges out of wooden on which the paste, preformed out of wafer, was plated.
Nowadays, the tile-channel are mechanically manufactured by extrusion through a semicircular die of section, then by cutting of the edges in order to obtain the necessary truncated form.
The assembly of the tiles channel is made two by two, a tile above with the back in top, a tile below with the back in bottom, laid out head-digs and the tile of cover coming to cover partially the tile of current. Thus the water which streams on the back of the tiles of top is collected by the channel which the tiles of lower part constitute.
The sealing of these roofs, generally of weak slope (25 to 40%), being limited for lack of “fitments”, the tile channel is rather used in the Mediterranean climates, not very rainy. It is primarily a southernmost tile but one finds it in Eastern Lorraine and Champagne on in-depth built rural buildings and whose roofs were with weak slope.
With the Middle Ages, a small module of tile-channel was used in Alsace.
Tile punt
It is the historical tile of the North of France, with steep slopes, punt with a round-off on the low part; she is used today center in north and Alsace, mainly in the campaigns or the historical sectors of the cities. For esthetic reasons or of sealing, one uses it either in simple covering or in double covering.
Other models
Modern versions of the tile, other models were designed, aiming at the economy and/or esthetics; let us quote mainly: the tile " mécanique" , and the tile " panne" who have a double fitment: side and in top. In the areas of mountain, let us announce also the tile out of wooden, such as the Essis (or essies), used in the the Vosges.
Additional tiles
They are tiles whose form allows a completion of the roof, such as for example the Faîtage (ridge tiles), the contour of Cheminée, the edges (bank tiles), the half-tiles for an installation " croisée" , tiles in Glass to let penetrate light of day in unquestionable parts of the roof, etc
