Tilapia
Tilapia/Saint-Pierre is one, of cichlidés , including/understanding approximately 40 S originating in the Ethiopian zone. With the species of the kind Oreochromis , they set up the group of Poisson S named Tilapia S (vernacular name). More usually known however under the name of " Saint-Pierre" in France and other countries " St Peter' S Fish". The largest specimens of tilapia measure 61 cm and weigh 5,5 kg.
Certain species of Tilapia/Saint-Pierre already were introduced into certain plans of fresh water of Central America and of South Asia East because they show characteristics interesting for the type of breeding:
- a general-purpose food mode (planktivorous, vegetarian or omnivore);
- a food index of generally high conversion and a growth;
- a great resistance to the lack of oxygen, but not of air breathing (dipneuste);
- a fast and easy reproduction;
- a small degree of parasitism, which decreases the losses caused by a fall in growth rate and mortality;
- a flesh of good quality and affordable price;
- a tolerance with water at relatively high temperature.
The current production of Saint-Pierre/Tilapia is of 1,5 million T, primarily in China and Philippines.
Saint-Pierre/Tilapia raised in Belgium
The Aquafarm company decided to produce this tropical fish in Belgium which however needs warm water to live. The idea of this company is to re-use the warm water which leaves the tertiary circuit of the Nuclear plant of Tihange.
