Lercoul is a common French, located in the department of the Ariège and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. Its inhabitants is called Lercouliens.

History

The oldest text mentioning Lercoul seems to go back to 1182 (“Elircol”) which locates the borough in the seigniory of Quié (close to Tarascon). However, Fl. Guillot dates a coal-scuttle (with radiocarbon) from year 500 after J.C…

At the time of the conflict between Foix and the king of France, “Lorcono” is quoted like forming well part of the County of Foix.

1335: donation by the count de Foix de Lercoul with the lord of Junac, Raimon de Vonc.

En1390, the enumeration of “Lhercol” gives 14 fires.

Ressortissait always of the châtellenie of Quiè in 1450.

Under the old mode, Lercoul is a hamlet and an appendix parochial of Siguer.

As for L `activity of the inhabitants, except that agricultural, it was in the iron mines of Rancié located between Lercoul and Sem, like in the manufacture of coal and slates.

In 1896, Lercoul comprises 74 houses, 72 households for 254 inhabitants.
