Thyssen

Thyssen are a family of Industriel S German having founded and having directed the company of the same name, specialized in steel. Their financial implication in the rise of the mode Nazi is often denounced.

In 1871, August Thyssen founded the Thyssen & Co. with Mülheim, in the the Ruhr, then, starting from 1883, it gradually bought all the actions of the Gewerkschaft Deutscher Kaiser located at Hamborn. This site interesting because was well provided in coal and was connected to the rail network.

It is thus q' in 1891, August Thyssen announced officially that him and his/her brother Joseph had become owners of the Gewerkschaft Deutscher Kaiser . This constitutes the birth of the Groupe Thyssen and in the years which followed, August developed its company, in particular by buying mines abroad and while approaching to the shipyards and the factories of machines.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the group is internationalized and centred on the site of Hamborn, that the son of August, Fritz, directs since 1897. But the First World War stops this expansion, in particular while cutting the group of its subsidiary companies abroad. Nevertheless, at the end of the war, the industrial instrument of the company in Germany is intact and it takes part in the rebuilding of Germany.

In 1925, August Thyssen succeeds in convincing the other companies of the sector of the steel of the Ruhr to join in a great trust. Except for Hoesch, Gutehoffnungshütte, Mannesmann, Klöckner and Krupp, all the large steel-works of the Ruhr amalgamate: thus is born the Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG . With died of August Thyssen in 1926, Fritz Thyssen is elected chairman of the board of Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG, the family having 26% of the capital of the trust.

Financial of Adolf Hitler, Thyssen took an active part in the rise of the Nazism then to the armament of the mode. They created the joint venture Union Banking Corporation in order to manage their investments in America, and placed an young talent at its head, Prescott Bush, father and large father of two presidents of the the United States.

At the end of the war, the allies dismantle Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG and in 1953 is founded in Duisbourg a new business, the August Thyssen-Hut AG . The other companies born of the dismantling of Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG turned over to Thyssen during the Années 1950 and 60.

The company continued its development and amalgamated in 1997 with its old competitor Krupp to form ThyssenKrupp AG.
