Thyna

Thyna , also spelled Tyna or Tina , is a city Tunisia located at 12 kilometers in the south of Sfax.

Attached administratively to the Governorship of Sfax, it is in the center of a delegation of 45.647 inhabitants (2006) and constitutes a municipality of 26.635 inhabitants while the city itself shelters a population of 18.168 people.

Old Thaenae constituted the southernmost city of the Roman province of Africa and formed one of the ends of the Limes (the other being Thabraca in the North-West of Tunisia) beyond from which the kingdom numide in 146 av. J. - C extended.. She becomes colony under the emperor Hadrian (117 - 138). Few archaeological vestiges were preserved but one raises the traces of thermal baths, villas, a basilica paléochrétienne, a Nécropole, tanks with saltings, etc

Its name is associated with the International airport of Sfax-Thyna located at the west of the city. It is crossed by the road GP1 which connects Sfax to Gabès. A zone Industrie of 42 Hectare S is operational there since 1999.

Thyna also has on its territory the larger second saltworks of the country (after those of Monastir) which extend on 1500 hectares and produce 300.000 tons of salt per annum. Employing 120 people, they are exploited by the general Company of the saltworks of Tunisia. This site is used also as ornithological Natural reserve for the winter migrations of birds.
