Geography
Pedology
Chemical analysis of the grounds by professor Gerard Mottet (seminar 2006 given to Toucy within the framework of the University for All of Puisaye-Forterre.
-
With the secondary (Jurassic - 205 to 140 million years) " the separation of Africa and South America created a hot arm of the sea to organic life producing for Forterre a more compact limestone - thus the career of Aubigny (Yonne) consists of coral limestone of hot sea. "
-
With the cretaceous (fine of the secondary air - 140 to 65 million years) " the cooling of the sea produces a chalk made up of a colloidal significant amount of silica (chalk of Sénonien). There are then decalcification of clays (or formation of clays of decalcification) in Puisaye and Pays of Othe. By withdrawing the sea gradually the Lake Beauce." will give;
Geology
-
Eight fossilized principal faults traverse the plates limestones of Puisaye and of Forterre, of which one which crosses Thury according to a Northern Southern direction and is prolonged while passing by the hamlet of Grangette .
-
" The ground of Forterre is consisted limestones of the Jurassic superior (secondary ground). The sedimentary layers follow one another of south-east the North-West: the Oxfordien, the Kimméridgien and the Portlandien; which is inserted then under the Crétacé inferior of Puisaye…." (Maurice Lecestre).
-
Forterre " continue the plates basic limestones Burgundy (Tonnerrois and Auxerrois) and forms the South-western part of it. It is in direct contact with the Puisaye in the West and the Nivernais in the South. The limits between Puisaye and Forterre are very clear: they are at the place where the layers of Jurassic higher - secondary era (Forterre) are inserted under that of the Infra-Cretaceous (Puisaye). For Thury, the line of demarcation passes by Malrue."
-
" Forterre is characterized by dry, stony slopes stripped enough crossed by the old white roads, on which are established agglomerated villages built out of calcareous stone. In North, Forterre stops with the valley of the Ouanne , in the South it is continued until the limit of the department and in the East it finishes when the forests of left bank of Yonne start by including the Western part of the forest of Frétoy . -

Demography
-
Thury was with the number of the villages of Puisaye deserted during 14th and 15th centuries (Black Death of 1348, wars and food shortages).
in 1476: 8 tenants. in 1481: 28 censitaires.
in 1497: 60 censitaires.
in 1549: 99 fires fixed with the receipt of the " usages".
in 1679, the priest counted " 900 hearts including 500 communicants and 400 enfants".
in 1683: 800 hearts including 450 communicants and 400 children.
in 1762: 900 hearts including 500 communicants.
in 1790: 901 inhabitants divided into 224 fires.
The population of Thury reached her peak in 1856. She declined then to pass under the bar of the 1000 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century. She did not cease declining then with the Rural migration.
The last census of 2007 gives 461 inhabitants.
- Dr. Robineau-Desvoidy in his “ statistical test on the canton of St Saver ” wrote in 1838:
“Difference in climate, difference in manners. Forterrat with the ensured step, the face coloured, does not resemble nothing with the inhabitant Puisaye which appears to be supported only with sorrow on its legs, and whose face is almost bloodless. At one all is life, movement, force and health; at the other, any advertisement prostration of the forces, languor, a continual state of deterioration. The man of Forterre is swift, dispos; it would be said that the man of Puisaye cannot walk and that it needs a stick to rest. First is undertaking, active; he likes to leave his country, to walk his trade; the second knows only his fields and its farm… Forterre provides men who, without being of a very-high size, are perfectly members, have the martial air, and do not fear the military exercises: Thury, Fontenoy, are mainly pointed out by the beauty of their conscripts…”
And as, “It is of Forterre as the communes of Puisaye of the canton of St Saver, and that those of the remainder of Puisaye, receive without delay the recruits of population which cultivate the ground, and which maintain continuity there the inhabitants. Without that this region would not delay to become deserted and uncultivated, since the majority of our natives succumb with time”.
“Thury acquires 46 years the so high figure for means of existence term human! Few communes of France (if however it is some) can glorifier of a similar longevity. It is in Thury that half of the deaths takes place from 55 to 95 years! and the fifth from 75 to 95 years! …”
