The expression thunder of Brest comes from the blow of gun which announced each day the opening and the closing of the doors of the Arsenal at 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. with the feet of the Château of Brest.
Contrary to a spread idea, the expression thunder of Brest does not refer to the gun of the Bagne of Brest from which the shooting announced the escapes, even if it is true that a blow of gun was indeed drawn when a convict escaped to inform the population, because a reward was offered to those which captured it.
This exclamation is the favorite expression of the character of the Capitaine Haddock of Hergé: “thousand million thousand ports of thunder of Brest” . (The derivatives are multiple.)
A group of musicians of Brest took again this expression for its name of scene. The group is specialized in the songs of sea and sailors.
