Unit of the international system of units

The ton (symbol T ), is a unit of table VIII of the international Système, i.e. apart from IF, but of use with the International System because of its role and its importance. A ton is worth thousand Kilogram S, that is to say 1000  kg (or 1 Mg, uncommon unit for which the ton is substituted).

Order of magnitude: a Cubic meter of Eau weighs a ton.

Multiples

  • a kiloton ( 1 kt ) is worth thousand tons, that is to say 106  kg.
  • a megaton ( 1 MT ) is worth a million (106) tons, that is to say 109  kg.
  • a gigatonne ( 1 WP ) is worth a billion (109) tons, that is to say 1012  kg.

Anglo-Saxon Units

The ton is also a Anglo-Saxon unit:
  • the ton ( your , or long tone for the Americans, symbol your ) is worth 1016,046  9 kg (2204 lb)
  • the short ton ( shorts your , or your for the Americans, symbol HS tn ) are worth 907,184  7 kg (2000 lb)

The countries which employ these last units indicate the ton of SO under the name of ton (instead of your ) or metric your “ton metric”.

Unit of energy

  • the Ton coal equivalent (symbol tce ) is an old unit of definite energy equal to 29,288  G J (7  G cal), which corresponds roughly to the energy released by the combustion of a ton of industrial coal; its use is replaced by that of the ton oil equivalent;
  • the Ton oil equivalent (symbol Mtoe ) is a unit of definite energy equal to 41,855  GJ (10  Gcal), which corresponds roughly to the energy released by the combustion of a ton of average Pétrole
  • the ton of TNT is a unit of definite energy equal to 4,6  TJ (Téra Joule), and being used to quantify the power of a Explosion, and in particular the potential power of a Nuclear weapon; this power is expressed in kilotons kt , or megatons MT (of TNT, generally omitted precision).

Unit of force

In Astronautics, the Tonne is the unit of Poussée of a Moteur of rocket, which is worth 1000  kgf.

Tonnage and displacement of the ships

  • the ton of gauge ( register your ) is an unsuitable name of the register ton, unit of volume being worth 2,831  684  659  2  m ³ (100 cubic feet).
  • the ton of volume ( measurement your ) makes it possible to evaluate the transport capacity of the ships (volume of the holds), for the goods of great volume and low-weight; it is worth 1,13267  m ³ (40 cubic feet)
  • ton of Port into heavy (symbol tpl or tdw - ton dead weight ) is a unit of gauge, being used to measure with the total mass that a ship can take out of compartment, without immersing itself beyond its line of maximum loading; it is worth 1000  kg.
